1979 – An interesting entry for the 1979 Silverstone 6 Hours was the Dome ZeroRL, which made its debut prior to an an attack on the Le Mans 24 Hours. Driven by Chris Craft and Gordon Spice, it sported an unusual open windscreen arrangement, apparently in an attempt at preventing a build-up of heat in the cockpit rather than in pursuit of some aerodynamic advantage. Powered by a Cosworth DFV it qualified third but finished a disappointing twelfth, 40 laps behind the winner. It fared even worse at Le Mans where the second car retired with engine problems early on and the lead car retiring before 7pm after running out of fuel. Photograph © Alan Cox and his info
