I wish I had remembered I had this shot of Masten Gregory to post last week on his birthday. Here he is blasting down the front straight in his 3-liter Alfa at Sebring in 1970 on his way to a 3rd place finish with co-driver Toine Hezemans, one lap behind the winner. This was a huge advancement for the Alfa team who had struggled in years past against larger displacement and better funded competition. They would continue to advance and would win the World’s Manufacturer’s Championship five years later. For Gregory, this was approaching the end of a career that had spanned three decades. I recently discovered that Gregory is in a distinct club of motorsport, being only one of nineteen drivers to compete in all three legs of the Triple Crown of Motorsport (Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Monaco Grand Prix) and to have won at least one of those events (he won Le Mans in 1965. His co-driver at that race, Jochen Rindt, is also in this club but with victories in two of the events.)
