Asdrúbal Esteban Fontes Bayardo, sometimes known as “Pocho” (26 December 1922, in Pan de Azúcar – 9 July 2006, in Montevideo) was a racing driver from Uruguay. Info from Wiki

The man from Uruguay started to race in the fiercely competitive Argentine Formula Libre since the mid50s. This series run under full F1 regulations. Fontes piloted a Maserati 4CLT with a V8 Chevrolet engine. He won at El Pinar circuit/ Montevideo in 1956 & at Interlagos in 1957.

In 1959 the Scuderia Centro Sud took him to Europe to take part in the French GP at Reims. But he recorded no time in the elderly Maserati 250F & failed to qualify.
So he returned to South America & continued with the Formula Libre. He also took part in some endurance races.
In the 1960s he was a concessionaire for General Motors in Pan de Azúcar, San Carlos and Maldonado, and was a director on the board of a company producing Opel-based pick-up trucks in Pan de Azucar under the name of “Marina”.

Later he worked for a production agency associated with BSE (Banco de Seguros del Estado).
In 2006 he passed away.
The Piriápolis street circuit is named after him.
