A resident of The Hague (Ned.), Roelof Wunderink began his career with a Simca in 1970 subsequently moving into Formula Ford and winning the Dutch championship in 1972.
With sponsorship from the HB alarm company, he moved into Formula Three and then Formula 5000 in the following two seasons. His first experience with Mo Nunn’s Ensign marque was in Formula 3 during 1973 but success was limited. With financial backing from the HB Alarm Company, he drove an ex-Teddy Pilette Chevron B24 in the 1974 European Formula 5000 Championship although little marked Wunderink as a future star. HB’s sponsorship smoothed a move to Formula 1 with Ensign in 1975.
He entered the early season non-championship races and finished 10th in the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch. He retired from his debut in the Spanish Grand Prix before failing to qualify in Monaco. In 1975, but was hampered by using old machinery in the Ensign team. In a Formula 5000 testing incident, he then suffered severe injuries, a broken cheekbone and severe facial lacerations after crashing Tony Dean’s F5000 Chevron B24 in a fast corner while testing at the Zandvoort track. In six Grand Prix attempts, he qualified on three occasions retiring from two Grand Prix races with mechanical problems. In his only finish, in Austria, he was not classified, four laps behind having pit-stopped for tyres.
At the end of the season, Wunderink withdrew from top-level motorsport quietly. He was subsequently known to be involved in the property business.
