Dave Charlton wrapped up his first of six South African Formula 1 championships in a row when he drove his Lotus 49C Ford-Cosworth to victory in the Kyalami Rand Spring Trophy, today in 1970 /3 October 1970/. Peter de Klerk was second on the day in his Brabham BT26 Cosworth from Bruce van der Merwe’s Brabham BT20 Repco, while outgoing 6-time champion John Love held de Klerk off for second in the title chase with Bobby Olthoff, Jackie Pretorius, Paddy Driver and Willie Ferguson next up. This is another of the innumerable photographic gems to feature on the forthcoming book Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit – 60 Years of Memories.
