Born in 1911, Cirillo Pagani (nicknamed ‘Nello’) was known more for his motorcycle racing though he competed in a number of Grand Prix races. His career spanned from 1928 to 1955 and he became the 125cc World Champion in 1949 though was almost a double Champion in that year, but finished second in the 500cc class.
In cars, he won the Pau Grand Prix in 1947 and 1948 and competed in his only F1 World Championship Grand Prix, in 1950’s Swiss Grand Prix at Bremgarten. He finished seventh and later finished in fourth place with a Simca Gordini in the Modena GP.
In 1952 he raced a Maserati A6GCS at the GP Interlagos and took third and fourth place finishes in the GP Boa Vista and GP Rio de Janeiro (Formula Libre). He finished second in class in that year’s Mille Miglia (driving an OSCA MT4 1100 with M.Severi) and he entered the 1953 and 1954 Mille Miglias (in a Fiat 1100 and a Stanguellini S1100) though retired from both races.
During this time he became the manager of the MV Agusta team motorbike race team and his son Alberto would also become a racing motorcyclist. In 1972 Alberto finished second in the 500cc world championship behind his MV Agusta teammate, Giacomo Agostini.
