Gerhard Mitter – F1 1963 – Through the garage of his father Mitter became interested in cars and motor racing. After some success on two wheels the German began racing with his own Formula Junior in 1959. He also established his his own workshop in 1962, which was specialized on tuning DKW engines. In the mid 1960s he was one of the best German drivers in sports cars and at hillclimbs. He won the European Hillclimb championship in 1966-1968, the Targa Florio in 1969 and the 1967 Mugello GP, both races with his friend Udo Schütz. Unfortunately he was killed while practicing the Formula 2 BMW F269 for the 1969 German GP. The photo shows him during his second Grand Prix. He drove one of the Ecurie Maarsbergen Porsche 718 to fourth place at the Nürburgring. It was his only points finish in his four Grands Prix.
