Photos of Ferrari GTO 3987GT, owned by John Mecom, Jr., and driven by Roger Penske at the Pensacola USRRC race on May 25, 1963. It was a scorching hot day on the Pensacola Naval Air Base Cory Field tarmac. I was in charge of pit communications and had the GTO black flagged for going out in practice without the headlights taped over. I was 18 at the time. Mecom is in the car at scrutineering; Jesse Coleman gives Roger Penske the checkered flag as he wins the GT race over several other GTOs and the Cobra team; Penske is congratulated by Jesse Coleman; Avis ladies present the race trophy to a hot, tired and very young Penske; Mecom (left) and Penske share the glory.
